"In my opinion, today's software products are the
most complex items created by humanity, except for our own
civilization".
An ISO 9000 Approach To Building Quality Software, Osten
Oskarsson
Even if an organization has the required
human resources, suitable tools and physical infrastructure
to develop a software project, it is far from success in this
task. Despite adding great individual knowledge and expertise
to the equation, great difficulties remain in developing high
quality software. As the US Software Engineering Institute
states:
"While organizations are focusing
on total customer satisfaction, there is a growing perception
that software quality and opportunity constitute a weak link
in high quality product development".
Indeed, according to The Standish Group,
over 23% of software projects begun in the US during 2002
failed completely, while another 49% did not perform as expected.
No wonder experts point to the growing severity of software
problems, and to software developer's inability to maintain
ever more complex applications.
The CMM (Capability Maturity Model)
and ISO models followed by our Company, comprehend the most
widely accepted standards aimed at solving this problem. While
ISO is common to many industries, the CMM model is highly
specialized for the areas of software development and services.
Indeed, the latter is considered the highest software engineering
standard in the world, and has become the de facto measure
to gauge the maturity of software organizations worldwide.
PSL is assessed at CMM level
5, the standard's highest level. Most software companies in
the world are appraised at CMM level 1, which describes organizations
that follow chaotic and random development processes. CMM
5 organizations, on the other hand, implement standardized,
fully documented and quantitatively measured development processes.
High level organizations produce faster, better, more reliable
software. Below is an example of CMM's impact at different
levels.

that make PSL's software
development process exceptional.
Excellent
application of the Software Life Cycle Model. Commitment of
management to the Quality System and usage of metrics to improve
the system and products. Cooperation and enthusiasm of all
personnel interviewed. Training and Servicing.
